SCIM attribute mapping failed with error "required attribute externalId is missing"
Related public instructions; check applicability and missing conditions.
Fixes the SCIM required attribute externalId is missing failure by supplying a stable source identifier in the mapping. Use when creates fail schema validation in the target. Not for optional attributes or target-side schema outages.
When it applies
Not specified by the original author.
Instructions
TL;DR
Add a stable, non-empty externalId to every create the source sends. Find which source attribute should carry the externalId, usually the immutable HR employee id, map it in the provisioning configuration, backfill it for users already in flight, and confirm the target schema really requires it. Then re-run one create and check the stored externalId in the target before resuming the full sync.
required attribute externalId is missingUse this when
- Target SCIM logs reject creates because the required attribute externalId is missing.
- Users whose source records lack an employee id fail while fully populated users succeed.
- A new target app or a stricter schema validation was recently enabled.
Not for this skill when
- The missing attribute is optional in the target schema and creates succeed. No action is needed.
- The failure is an authentication rejection. Resolve credentials before schema work.
Steps
- Open the target SCIM service schema or its provisioning documentation and confirm externalId is required on create, noting its format rules such as maximum length or character set. Then capture one failing create payload from the source provisioning logs to confirm the field is absent rather than empty or misnamed. Verify: the payload truly omits externalId and the schema truly requires it
- In the source identity system, choose the canonical value: an immutable employee id or directory object id that never changes on rename, transfer, or rehire. Reject email or username as the value because both change and would break the link the externalId exists to preserve. Verify: the chosen attribute is populated and stable for a sample of active users
- Open the provisioning attribute mapping, add or correct the mapping from the chosen source attribute to the target externalId, and set the mapping to apply on create and update with a flow that never sends a blank. If the platform supports it, mark the attribute as a matching identifier with the agreed precedence. Verify: the saved mapping shows the source, target, and apply rules as intended
- Backfill the in-flight population: find hires whose source records lack the chosen identifier, fix those HR or directory records first, and confirm no active user still produces a blank value. A mapping alone cannot fix empty source records and the failures will simply continue for that subset. Verify: a report of active in-scope users with a blank identifier returns zero rows
- Provision one previously failing user on demand, then read the created resource in the target and confirm the stored externalId equals the source value exactly. Create a second test with an update to confirm the value stays stable and is not overwritten by a blank on later cycles. Verify: the target resource holds the correct externalId after both create and update
- Resume the full sync and monitor the first cycles for the same schema rejection, then document the canonical identifier choice in the provisioning design notes so future app onboardings map it from day one. Verify: no externalId rejections appear in the resumed cycles
Why it happens
SCIM targets use externalId as the durable correlation key between their resource and the source system record. Some services enforce it as required because without it they cannot safely match updates, deletes, or reactivated accounts. Sources omit it when the mapping was copied from an app that did not need it, or when the underlying HR identifier is blank for a worker class such as contingent staff. Sending a stable value on every create satisfies the schema and gives both sides a permanent join key for all later lifecycle operations.
Variants and edge cases
externalId present but still rejected
An empty string or whitespace value fails required checks just like an absent field. Trim the source value in the mapping expression and reject blanks at the HR record level.
Two sources write different externalId values
When both an HR feed and a directory sync write the attribute, pick one owner and disable the other mapping, otherwise the value oscillates and matching breaks intermittently.
Target requires externalId only for a user class
Guest or service accounts created outside the HR flow may need a generated identifier from the provisioning tool itself. Supply a prefixed object id for that class and document the exception.
Compatibility: Applies to SCIM 2.0 provisioning from Entra ID, Okta, and similar sources to SaaS targets that enforce the core user schema. Based on the SCIM core schema specification.

pingidentity scim attribute mapping failed error
Related public instructions; check applicability and missing conditions.
Fixes PingIdentity SCIM provisioning failures caused by bad attribute mappings, such as missing required attributes or type mismatches. Not for SCIM authentication failures or network connectivity problems to the target.

pingidentity scim attribute mapping failed error
TL;DR
Read the provisioning error to name the exact attribute that failed. Open the SCIM connection's attribute mapping in PingOne or PingFederate and fix that mapping: supply a default for missing source values, correct the target schema URN, or coerce the type. Save, trigger a re-provision, and confirm the user object lands correctly in the target.
pingidentity scim attribute mapping failed errorUse this when
- PingOne or PingFederate SCIM provisioning fails with an attribute mapping error
- Users fail to provision because a required target attribute has no value
- A mapping that worked before breaks after a directory schema change
Not for this skill when
- SCIM connector authentication failures (fix credentials first)
- The target SCIM endpoint is unreachable (network or firewall issue)
- Failures on every user at once (suspect auth or endpoint, not mapping)
Steps
Step 1: Name the failing attribute
Open the provisioning error or failed-task detail and identify exactly which attribute mapping failed and why (missing value, type mismatch, too long). Expected: you can point at one mapping row, not the whole configuration.
Step 2: Open the attribute mapping
In the Ping admin console, open the SCIM connection and its attribute mapping table. Find the row for the failing attribute. Expected: you see the source expression and the target attribute side by side.
Step 3: Fix the mapping
Add a default value for source attributes that can be empty, fix the target schema URN for extension attributes, or add a transform expression to coerce formats like phone numbers. Expected: the mapping produces a valid value for the failing user.
Step 4: Re-run provisioning for the affected users
Save the mapping and trigger provisioning again for the failed users, or wait for the next sync cycle. Expected: the users provision without mapping errors.
Step 5: Verify in the target
Check the user object in the target application and confirm the mapped attributes hold the expected values. Expected: the target record matches the source of truth.
Step 6: Guard the mapping
Add the previously-missing source attribute to your joiner checklist so new users always carry it. Expected: the same mapping never fails for missing data again.
Tool compatibility
PingOne for Enterprise / PingFederate provisioning; SCIM 2.0 outbound provisioning; Ping admin console attribute mapping.
Variant phrasings
Variant 1
pingone scim provisioning attribute mapping failed
Variant 2
pingfederate scim user provisioning mapping error required attribute
Variant 3
pingidentity scim schema extension attribute mapping failed
Why it happens
SCIM provisioning is a translation job: directory attributes on one side must become the target application's schema on the other, and the mapping table is where that translation is declared. It breaks in two classic ways. First, the source stops supplying a value the target requires, often after an HR or directory change drops an attribute. Second, the mapping itself is wrong for the target schema: a core attribute mapped where an extension URN belongs, a multi-valued attribute fed a single string, or a value that violates the target's format rules. The provisioning engine reports the failure per user, which makes it look like a user problem, but the fix is always in the shared mapping, applied once for every user it affects.
Edge cases / pitfalls
- Extension schema URNs must match the target exactly; a near-miss URN fails every user silently at the mapping step.
- Multi-valued attributes (emails, phone numbers) need explicit primary-value handling or the target rejects them.
- Test mappings against a single user before saving when the console offers a preview; a bad save breaks provisioning for everyone.

E0000047 API validation failed" SCIM user create
Related public instructions; check applicability and missing conditions.
Fixes Okta E0000047 SCIM user-create failures by reading the target app's SCIM schema and correcting the attribute mapping. Use when provisioning returns E0000047 on user create. Not for 409 duplicate-user conflicts or 401 connector auth failures.
When it applies
Not specified by the original author.
Instructions
TL;DR
E0000047 means the SCIM request reached the target app but the app rejected the payload. The fix is on the mapping side: check the app's SCIM attribute requirements, especially required fields and their formats, then force a re-provision.
"E0000047 API validation failed" SCIM user createUse this when
- Okta provisioning to a SCIM app fails with E0000047 on user create.
- The Okta side looks fine but the target app keeps rejecting.
- The failure started after an app or mapping change.
Not for this skill when
- The error is a 409 conflict. That is a duplicate user, a different fix.
- The connector itself cannot authenticate. That is a credential problem.
- Users fail on update but create works. Check the update mapping separately.
Steps
- Open the failed provisioning task in the Okta System Log and read the full error detail. Verify: you have the target app's rejection reason, not just the Okta code.
- Read the target app's SCIM schema for the User resource, noting required attributes. Verify: you know exactly which fields the app demands.
- Open the app's Provisioning settings, then the To App attribute mapping. Verify: every required target field is mapped from a non-empty Okta attribute.
- Fix formats the app is picky about: userName shape, email validity, name parts. Verify: the mapped values match the app's documented format.
- Force a re-provision for one affected user. Verify: the task succeeds, then re-enable scheduled provisioning.
Variant phrasings
SCIM 400 bad request
The underlying HTTP status behind E0000047.
"failed to create user" SCIM
The symptom-level phrasing.
Okta provisioning error E0000047
The code-first search.
Compatibility: Okta SCIM 2.0 provisioning, Classic and Okta Identity Engine. Target-app specifics vary; the triage order does not.
Why it happens
Each app implements SCIM slightly differently. Okta's default profile mapping sends a standard attribute set, and apps with stricter schemas reject fields that are missing, malformed, or unexpected. The rejection surfaces as E0000047 on the Okta side.
Edge cases / pitfalls
- Apps that require the email address as userName while Okta sends a login that is not an email.
- Apps that reject profile updates to name fields after create but accept them on create.
- Trial or sandbox app orgs where user creation is disabled entirely.
- Custom attributes the app documents but its SCIM endpoint does not actually accept.
