pingidentity scim attribute mapping failed error
Fixes PingIdentity SCIM provisioning failures caused by bad attribute mappings, such as missing required attributes or type mismatches. Not for SCIM authentication failures or network connectivity problems to the target.
pingidentity scim attribute mapping failed error
TL;DR
Read the provisioning error to name the exact attribute that failed. Open the SCIM connection's attribute mapping in PingOne or PingFederate and fix that mapping: supply a default for missing source values, correct the target schema URN, or coerce the type. Save, trigger a re-provision, and confirm the user object lands correctly in the target.
pingidentity scim attribute mapping failed errorUse this when
- PingOne or PingFederate SCIM provisioning fails with an attribute mapping error
- Users fail to provision because a required target attribute has no value
- A mapping that worked before breaks after a directory schema change
Not for this skill when
- SCIM connector authentication failures (fix credentials first)
- The target SCIM endpoint is unreachable (network or firewall issue)
- Failures on every user at once (suspect auth or endpoint, not mapping)
Steps
Step 1: Name the failing attribute
Open the provisioning error or failed-task detail and identify exactly which attribute mapping failed and why (missing value, type mismatch, too long). Expected: you can point at one mapping row, not the whole configuration.
Step 2: Open the attribute mapping
In the Ping admin console, open the SCIM connection and its attribute mapping table. Find the row for the failing attribute. Expected: you see the source expression and the target attribute side by side.
Step 3: Fix the mapping
Add a default value for source attributes that can be empty, fix the target schema URN for extension attributes, or add a transform expression to coerce formats like phone numbers. Expected: the mapping produces a valid value for the failing user.
Step 4: Re-run provisioning for the affected users
Save the mapping and trigger provisioning again for the failed users, or wait for the next sync cycle. Expected: the users provision without mapping errors.
Step 5: Verify in the target
Check the user object in the target application and confirm the mapped attributes hold the expected values. Expected: the target record matches the source of truth.
Step 6: Guard the mapping
Add the previously-missing source attribute to your joiner checklist so new users always carry it. Expected: the same mapping never fails for missing data again.

Variant phrasings
Variant 1
pingone scim provisioning attribute mapping failed
Variant 2
pingfederate scim user provisioning mapping error required attribute
Variant 3
pingidentity scim schema extension attribute mapping failed
Why it happens
SCIM provisioning is a translation job: directory attributes on one side must become the target application's schema on the other, and the mapping table is where that translation is declared. It breaks in two classic ways. First, the source stops supplying a value the target requires, often after an HR or directory change drops an attribute. Second, the mapping itself is wrong for the target schema: a core attribute mapped where an extension URN belongs, a multi-valued attribute fed a single string, or a value that violates the target's format rules. The provisioning engine reports the failure per user, which makes it look like a user problem, but the fix is always in the shared mapping, applied once for every user it affects.
Edge cases / pitfalls
- Extension schema URNs must match the target exactly; a near-miss URN fails every user silently at the mapping step.
- Multi-valued attributes (emails, phone numbers) need explicit primary-value handling or the target rejects them.
- Test mappings against a single user before saving when the console offers a preview; a bad save breaks provisioning for everyone.
