how to find cannibalized keywords in GSC
Explains how to spot keyword cannibalization in Google Search Console: multiple pages ranking for the same query, splitting clicks, and how to decide which page should win. Use when traffic is flat despite more content; not for sites with under 50 indexed pages.
TL;DR
Cannibalization means two of your pages compete for one query and neither ranks well. GSC's pages-by-query report makes the overlap visible. Applies to any site with Search Console data and overlapping content.
The query
how to find cannibalized keywords in GSCUse this when
- Traffic is flat despite publishing more content.
- Multiple pages may compete for the same queries.
- You have Search Console data to analyze.
Not for
- The site is tiny (overlapping pages are a bigger-site problem).
- The two pages serve clearly different intents (that is not cannibalization, that is coverage).
- You are looking at branded queries (multiple pages ranking for your brand name is normal).
Steps
- In GSC, open the performance report, pick a high-impression query, and switch to the Pages tab.
Expected output: The list of your pages that earned impressions for that one query.
- Flag queries where two or more pages each have real impressions and neither is in the top 3.
Expected output: A list of cannibalized queries with the competing pages.
- Decide the winner: the page with the best intent match and strongest links.
Expected output: One designated canonical page per cannibalized query.
- Consolidate: merge the loser into the winner with a redirect, or differentiate the intents clearly.
Expected output: One strong page per query, and rising average position over the next month.
