BigQuery dashboard query failed with error "quota exceeded" in Data Studio fix
Fixes a Looker Studio dashboard backed by BigQuery that fails with a quota exceeded error by reducing query volume, adding caching and checking project quotas. Use when charts fail at peak times with a quota message. Not for a billing disabled project, which fails with a different error.
TL;DR
Cut the number and weight of BigQuery queries the dashboard fires before asking for a quota increase. Reduce chart count per page, turn on data caching, replace live blended sources with an extract or a materialized table, and check which quota the error names in the Google Cloud console. Looker Studio fires one or more queries per chart, so busy dashboards hit daily and concurrent quotas quickly.
quota exceededUse this when
- Charts in a BigQuery backed dashboard fail with a quota message, often at busy times of day.
- The same dashboard works early in the day or for a single viewer and fails under load.
- The Google Cloud console shows quota usage at or near the limit for the billing project.
Not for this skill when
- Every Google service in the project fails, suggesting a billing or project level problem rather than dashboard query volume.
- One chart shows a configuration error with no quota wording. Fix that chart definition directly.
Steps
- Note the exact quota wording in the chart error, then open the quotas page for the project in the Google Cloud console and find that quota. Verify: the named quota shows usage at its limit for the current window
- Count the charts and data sources on the failing dashboard page, including blends, and identify the heaviest live BigQuery sources. Verify: you can rank the sources by likely query volume
- Enable caching on the data sources where the product allows it and set a refresh window the business accepts, so repeat views stop firing fresh queries. Verify: reloading the dashboard serves cached results without new errors
- Replace the heaviest live source with an extract data source or a scheduled materialized table in BigQuery, and repoint the charts to it. Verify: the charts render from the new source with current data
- Reduce per-view load by splitting the busiest page or removing duplicate charts that query the same table. Verify: a full page load completes with all charts rendered at peak time
- If volume is genuinely required, request a quota increase for the named quota with the usage graph as evidence. Verify: the console shows the approved higher limit before the next peak
Why it happens
Quota errors are accounting, not code defects. The dashboard generated more billable or concurrent work than the project allows, usually because every chart queries live tables for every viewer. Caching, extracts and materialized tables cut the multiplier, while a quota increase only helps when the remaining volume is real and budgeted. Fixing volume first keeps the increase request credible and the dashboard fast.
Looker Studio, formerly Data Studio, queries BigQuery on view unless the data source uses cached or extracted data. Quotas apply per project and per user in several forms, including concurrent interactive queries and daily bytes processed on some setups. A dashboard with many charts, blends and viewer traffic multiplies query volume until the named quota is exhausted, after which charts fail until the window resets or the load drops.
Field notes for Looker Studio and its connectors specifically. The report resource state, the data source credentials model, and the underlying service quotas together explain most incidents, and the error wording in the product is deliberately vague, so the underlying service console, such as the Google Cloud console for BigQuery, is usually where the precise cause is written down. Testing in a private window signed in as the report owner is essential, because Studio behaviour changes with which account the browser carries, and many false fixes come from testing as the wrong user.
Studio estates stay healthy when production reports are owned by team accounts with documented access, and when the heaviest reports sit on extracted or materialized data rather than live queries. The tool makes live connections so easy that estates drift into hundreds of live charts against shared quotas, and the failures then arrive as a group at the busiest moment. A short register of production reports, their owners, and their data sources turns quota and credential incidents from archaeology into administration.
