dashboard drill-through broken: link parameter missing error troubleshooting

Export

Fixes a broken dashboard drill-through where the link or action is missing a parameter the target page needs, by restoring the parameter mapping. Use when clicking through lands on an error or an empty target page. Not for a drill-through whose target page itself is broken for direct visitors.

TL;DR

Open the drill-through definition and compare the parameters it sends with the parameters the target page requires. A renamed field, a removed filter, or a target page edited to require a new parameter breaks the handoff silently, and the click either errors or opens the target with an empty filter. Remapping the source field to the target parameter restores the flow.

Use this when

  • Clicking a drill-through lands on an error page or an empty target while the target works when opened directly.
  • A field was renamed or the target page gained a required filter recently.
  • The dashboard was copied and its drill links still reference the original target setup.

Not for this skill when

  • The target page errors for direct visitors too. Fix the target page before its inbound links.
  • There is no drill-through configured at all. That is a design gap, not a broken parameter mapping.

Steps

  1. Open the target page directly and apply its filters by hand to confirm it returns data. Verify: the target renders correctly with manually supplied values
  2. List the parameters the target requires from its filter and parameter definitions. Verify: every required parameter is named with its expected type
  3. Open the source visual drill-through or link settings and list the parameters it actually sends. Verify: the sent list can be compared name by name with the required list
  4. Remap any missing or renamed parameter to the correct source field, and set a sensible behaviour for empty source values. Verify: the saved drill definition covers every required target parameter
  5. Click through from the source with a value whose target result you know, and compare the target figures. Verify: the target opens filtered to the clicked value with matching totals
  6. Repeat the click test from every visual that carries the same drill-through, since each visual stores its own definition. Verify: all source visuals hand off correctly

Why it happens

Two sided contracts break from one sided edits, and drill-throughs are edited from the source side far more often than they are tested end to end. A short click test after any rename or target change is the cheapest regression check in dashboard maintenance. Teams that document the parameter contract on the target page give editors the list they need before they change a name.

Drill-throughs are contracts between two pages. The source sends values for named parameters, and the target filters itself by those names. Because each side can be edited independently, the contract breaks in ordinary maintenance, a field rename on the source, a new required filter on the target, or a copied dashboard whose links still point at the original target. The target page usually works when opened directly with manual filters, which separates this failure from a broken target.

Field notes for dashboard estates generally. The most valuable incident habit is to separate the layers before changing anything, source data, dataset or model, dashboard definition, and delivery or viewing layer, and to prove which layer is wrong with one test per layer. Most dashboard failures are reported at the viewing layer and fixed at the wrong layer at least once before the real cause is found. A one line layer verdict in the incident note, with the test that proved it, saves the next engineer the same detour when the symptom recurs.

A second general habit is to keep a known good reference for every important dashboard, one number per dashboard that an owner can check against the source system in under a minute. Reconciliation beats error hunting for the silent failures, wrong definitions, shifted dates, stale caches, because those produce no error at all. Dashboards with a reference check get their silent failures found by the team, while dashboards without one get them found by the audience, which is the difference between maintenance and incident response.

Variants and edge cases

drill-through link parameter missing target page empty fix

The empty target phrasing matching the common symptom.

dashboard drill action broken after field rename remap

The rename variant where the source field changed name.

copied dashboard drill-through points at original target

The copy variant where links reference the wrong target.
