Solution skill
stripe trial_end backdated: proration invoice for the missed trial days
Complete solution
Explains the proration invoice Stripe creates when you backdate a subscription trial_end: the customer owes for the days the trial should not have covered. Use when shortening a trial retroactively. Not for extending trials.
TL;DR
Backdating trial_end ends the trial in the past, so Stripe bills the customer for the days between the backdated end and now via a proration invoice. That is expected. Preview it with upcoming-invoice before committing so nobody is surprised by the charge.
trial_end backdated proration invoiceUse this when
- You shortened a trial retroactively and a surprise proration invoice appeared.
- An admin corrected a trial end date to the past.
- You need to preview the charge before backdating.
Not for this skill when
- You extended the trial into the future. Extensions create no proration invoice.
- The proration invoice is wrong by a large amount. Check the timestamps, not the behavior.
Steps
- ('Preview first: call upcoming-invoice with the backdated trialend. Verify: the proration lines show the expected days and amount.', 'Apply the trialend change. Verify: Stripe finalizes a proration invoice for the gap.', 'Check the invoice lines: they should cover exactly the backdated window. Verify: line dates match your intended trial end.', 'If the amount is wrong, the backdated timestamp is wrong. Correct the timestamp, void the invoice, and redo. Verify: the new invoice matches.', 'Notify the customer if the charge is material. Verify: support has the explanation ready.')
Variant phrasings
stripe backdate trial_end invoice
Short search.
stripe trial shortened proration charge
Symptom search.
trial_end in the past stripe billing
Date phrasing.
Compatibility: Stripe Billing subscriptions API. trial_end accepts Unix timestamps, past or future.
Why it happens
A trial is free time. When you declare that the free time actually ended earlier, the days since then were not free, so Stripe converts them into billable time with a proration invoice. The invoice is the system keeping the ledger honest: free days became paid days the moment you moved the boundary into the past.
Edge cases / pitfalls
- Backdating trial_end bills the customer immediately on next invoice finalization. Preview first, always.
- Setting trial_end to now ends the trial with no proration. Only the past creates a charge.
- If the subscription is already past due, the proration invoice joins the collection problem.
- trial_end backdating cannot cross the subscription start date. The API rejects that.
