salesforce territory assignment failed after reorg

Complete solution

Fixes Salesforce territory assignment breaking after a reorg: rules reference old territories or inactive users. Re-run assignment after updating rules. Use when accounts land unassigned post-reorg. Not for lead assignment rules.

TL;DR

Territory rules point at the old org chart: renamed territories, deactivated users, and stale criteria. Update the rule model to the new structure, re-run assignment for the affected accounts, and verify coverage. Assignment is a batch job; it does not self-heal after a reorg.

Error

(No error; the symptom is accounts with no territory or the wrong territory after the reorg.)

Steps

  1. Open the territory model and compare it to the new org chart. Expected: you find renamed, split, or deleted territories.
  2. Update the assignment rules to the new territory names and criteria. Expected: rules reflect the current structure.
  3. Replace inactive users in territory assignments with their successors. Expected: no territory points at a deactivated user.
  4. Run territory assignment for the affected accounts (the batch job, not record by record). Expected: accounts get their new territories.
  5. Audit the leftovers: accounts with no territory after the run need a rule or a manual assignment. Expected: full coverage.

When to use

  • Accounts are mis-territoried after a reorg.
  • Territory rules reference old team names.
  • After merging or splitting territories.

When not to use

  • Lead assignment rules (separate engine).
  • Owner changes blocked by sharing rules.

Tool compatibility

  • Salesforce territory management; assignment batch jobs.
  • Enterprise Territory Management model.

Variant phrasings

accounts unassigned after reorg

Rules were never updated; update and re-run.

territory model out of date

Same fix from the model side.

Why it happens

Territory assignment is rule-driven and point-in-time. A reorg changes the reality the rules describe, but nobody re-runs the job, so accounts keep their stale territories indefinitely.

Edge cases

  • Running assignment during business hours can briefly flip ownership; schedule off-hours.
  • Accounts matching multiple rules need priority order defined; check it.
  • Historical reporting by old territory needs the old model preserved or mapped.
