Solution skill

0x800f081f the source files could not be found dism failed

Version 1

Complete solution

Fixes DISM error 0x800f081f, where the component store repair cannot find source files because the default source (Windows Update or WSUS) lacks the matching payload. Use when DISM /RestoreHealth fails with this code. Not for SFC-only faults on a healthy store.

TL;DR

DISM fails with 0x800f081f when it knows what to repair but cannot download a clean copy of the damaged files. Point DISM at a mounted ISO of the exact same Windows build, edition, and language with /Source and /LimitAccess, and if the box is WSUS-managed, note that WSUS does not carry the repair payload by default.

0x800f081f the source files could not be found dism failed

Use this when

  • DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth stops with 0x800f081f.
  • DISM reports the component store is repairable but the source files could not be found.
  • The machine gets updates from WSUS rather than Microsoft directly.

Not for this skill when

  • DISM says the store is healthy. There is nothing for a source to repair.
  • SFC finds faults but DISM passes cleanly. Work the SFC log instead.

Steps

  1. Run winver and note the exact build and edition, then download the matching ISO from Microsoft. Verify: ISO build, edition, and language all match the installed system
  2. Mount the ISO, find install.wim or install.esd in the sources folder, and note its drive letter and the index for your edition using DISM /Get-WimInfo. Verify: the index number for the installed edition is identified
  3. Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth with /Source pointing at that wim and index, plus /LimitAccess. Verify: the restore operation completes successfully instead of stopping at 0x800f081f
  4. Run sfc /scannow to finish file-level repair. Verify: SFC reports no integrity violations, or violations it repaired
  5. If the fleet is WSUS-managed, set the policy Specify settings for optional component installation and component repair to contact Windows Update directly. Verify: a later DISM run succeeds without the ISO source

Variant phrasings

DISM restorehealth source files could not be found

The message-first phrasing without the hex code.

0x800f081f WSUS repair content missing

The WSUS variant, where the repair payload is never on the WSUS server.

DISM source install.wim index fix

The offline-source phrasing used once the ISO route is chosen.

Compatibility: Compatibility: Windows 10, 11, and Server 2016 and later; ISO must match build, edition, and language exactly.

Why it happens

Component repair needs pristine copies of damaged files. WSUS distributes updates, not the full component repair payload, and a group policy that forces all content through WSUS leaves DISM with no valid source. A version-mismatched ISO fails the same way, because DISM will not take files from a different build.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • An esd-based source works but is slower; convert or accept the longer repair time.
  • Language packs change the required source: a system with extra languages may need those sources too.
  • Do not copy a component store folder from another machine; servicing will reject the mismatched payloads.
