dagit 500 error loading asset view
Complete solution
Fixes Dagit 500 errors on the asset view: corrupt asset metadata, event log storage problems, and oversized asset graphs. Use when the asset page 500s but other Dagit pages work. Not for Dagit failing to start at all.
TL;DR
A 500 on the asset view means the webserver crashed rendering it: usually a storage query that fails, an asset record the code does not expect, or a graph too large to serialize. Check the Dagit server logs for the traceback first; the browser just shows 500. Fix the storage or data issue the traceback names.
dagit 500 error loading asset viewUse this when
- The Dagit asset view returns 500 while other pages load.
- It started after a Dagster upgrade or a storage migration.
- Only certain asset groups trigger it.
Not for this skill when
- Dagit will not start. That is a server problem, not a view problem.
- The asset view loads but shows wrong data. That is a data problem.
Steps
- Read the Dagit server logs for the full traceback behind the 500. Note the exception and where it was raised. Verify: the real error is in hand
- Check event log and asset storage health: a corrupt or unreachable store breaks rendering. Note storage status. Verify: storage is confirmed or implicated
- Narrow it to an asset group or asset: load groups one by one. Note the triggering group. Verify: the scope is narrowed
- Fix the named cause: repair storage, drop the corrupt record, or reduce the graph size. Note the fix addresses the traceback. Verify: the cause is fixed
- Reload the asset view and confirm it renders. Note the page loads. Verify: the fix is verified
Variant phrasings
dagit asset page 500
The compact phrasing.
dagster ui 500 error
The general UI search.
Compatibility: Dagster 1.x Dagit. Asset view rendering changed across 1.x; the traceback names the version-specific code path.
Why it happens
The asset view is the most complex page in Dagit: it joins asset definitions, materialization events, checks, and lineage into one graph. Any unexpected record, a materialization for a deleted asset, a check result the serializer does not handle, a storage hiccup mid-query, crashes the render and surfaces as a bare 500. The browser error is useless by design; the server traceback is the whole diagnosis.
Edge cases / pitfalls
- Huge asset graphs can 500 from serialization time or memory, not from bad data. Paginate or split groups if the graph is enormous.
- After upgrades, stale event records from the old version can break the new renderer. Check upgrade migration notes.
- A 500 that only one user sees can be a permissions-filtered query hitting an unexpected empty set. Compare across roles.
- Reverse proxies in front of Dagit can turn slow renders into 500s via their own timeouts. Check proxy logs too.
