Solution skill

cf_clearance cookie expired mid-crawl cloudflare managed challenge reappears

Version 1

Complete solution

Handles a Cloudflare cf_clearance cookie expiring mid-crawl and the managed challenge returning: session refresh, request pacing, and when to stop crawling. Use when a crawl starts fine and the challenge reappears after the cookie TTL. Not a bypass guide; not for first-request challenges.

TL;DR

The clearance cookie has a limited lifetime, usually around 30 minutes, and the challenge returning mid-crawl is expected behavior. Slow the crawl so sessions last, re-solve the challenge in a visible browser session when it lapses, and keep the same cookie jar across runs. If the challenge reappears every few minutes, Cloudflare is telling you the crawl is unwanted, and the right move is to stop or use an official feed.

Use this when

  • The crawl works for a while, then Cloudflare serves the managed challenge again.
  • Deleting cookies and re-solving fixes it temporarily.
  • You have legitimate access to the site and crawl with permission.

Not for this skill when

  • The challenge appears on the first request. That is a new-session problem, not expiry.
  • You are trying to skip the challenge entirely. That is bypass, and this skill does not cover it.

Steps

  1. Log the cookie's lifetime: record when cf_clearance is set and when the challenge returns. Verify: you know the actual TTL instead of guessing.
  2. Shorten crawl sessions to fit inside the TTL: finish a batch, then refresh the session before the cookie dies. Verify: challenges stop appearing mid-batch.
  3. Re-solve in a real, visible browser session (headed mode, human-paced), then export the cookie jar into your crawler. Verify: the crawler inherits a fresh clearance without solving anything headless.
  4. Keep one persistent cookie jar per site across runs. Reusing a warm jar lasts longer than solving fresh each time. Verify: jar reuse extends the working window.
  5. If the challenge still returns within minutes of a fresh solve, reduce the request rate drastically or stop that site. Verify: a polite rate holds clearance; if nothing holds it, record the site as not crawlable.

Variant phrasings

managed challenge mid scrape

Symptom phrasing, lands on the session-refresh loop.

Compatibility: Cloudflare managed challenge, any crawler. Clearance TTL is set by the site owner and varies.

Why it happens

The clearance cookie proves a challenge was solved, and Cloudflare deliberately limits how long that proof lasts. Aggressive crawl patterns (many requests, machine timing, headless fingerprints) make the site re-challenge sooner. The reappearing challenge is the system working as designed, not a bug to route around.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Headless challenge-solving services exist; using them to dodge a site's bot defense is evasion. Solve visibly or not at all.
  • Rotating IPs to get fresh challenges is evasion. One session, one identity.
  • Some sites set very short TTLs on purpose for crawler-shaped traffic. That is a signal, not a puzzle.
  • If the site offers an API, RSS, or data export, the challenge is the site telling you to use it.
