Immutable solution version

freshdesk api "company_id required" creating ticket

Version 1

Complete solution

A guide to fixing the Freshdesk "company_id required" error when creating tickets via API, in the business-apis-integrations category: requester-company association, payload shape, and contact setup. Use when ticket creation fails demanding company_id, or when building Freshdesk integrations. Not for Freshdesk company management UI, contact deduplication, or ticket field design.

TL;DR

"companyid required" means the requester you attached is not associated with any company and your Freshdesk setup requires the association. Fix it at the source: associate the contact with their company before creating the ticket, or pass the companyid explicitly in the payload. The ticket create call is fine; the contact record is incomplete.

The query

freshdesk api "company_id required" creating ticket

Use this when

  • Ticket creation via API fails on company_id
  • Integrations create tickets for new contacts
  • You are building Freshdesk contact sync
  • Bulk ticket creation hits this error

Not for

  • Managing companies in the Freshdesk UI
  • Deduplicating contacts
  • Designing custom ticket fields
  • Ticket creation from the agent UI

Steps

1. Check whether the requester contact exists and has a company

Look up the contact by email. If it exists but has no company, that is the whole bug. If it does not exist, the create-contact step is where the company must be attached.

Expected output: contact state (exists, company-linked or not) known.

2. Associate the contact with the company first

Update the contact to set its company before creating the ticket. Order matters: the ticket create validates the association at write time, so the contact must be linked before the ticket call runs.

Expected output: contact-company link in place before ticket creation.

3. Or pass company_id explicitly in the ticket payload

If the integration knows the company, include it directly on the ticket create. This skips the contact-update round trip. Use it when the company is unambiguous from context.

Expected output: ticket creates carrying company_id succeeding.

4. Decide the policy for contacts with unknown companies

New contacts from unknown companies need a rule: a default company, a holding company for triage, or a hard requirement that blocks creation. Pick one deliberately; "fail with company_id required" is the accidental policy.

Expected output: an explicit unknown-company policy.

5. Validate contact completeness at sync time

When syncing contacts from the source system, require the company mapping there. Catching missing companies in the sync keeps the ticket path clean. The ticket create should never be the first place a missing company is discovered.

Expected output: company mapping enforced in contact sync.

Template: the checklist

Company_id on ticket create:
[ ] Contact existence and company link checked
[ ] Contact associated before ticket creation, or company_id passed explicitly
[ ] Unknown-company policy defined and implemented
[ ] Company mapping validated in contact sync
[ ] Ticket create never the first missing-company detector

Why it happens

Freshdesk's company requirement is a data-model constraint: in B2B setups, every ticket belongs to a company through its requester. But contacts arrive from many paths (API, email, imports) that do not enforce the link, so the constraint surfaces at ticket creation as this error. The ticket call is the messenger; the contact record is the problem.

Edge cases

  • Contacts belonging to multiple companies: pick the right one per ticket context; the API may need explicit selection.
  • Company merges: old company_ids can dangle. Re-link contacts after merges.
  • Email-to-ticket for unknown senders: auto-created contacts have no company. The unknown-company policy governs these.
  • Required versus optional: if the business does not truly need companies, make the field optional instead of fighting it per ticket.
