Immutable solution version
infisical secret reference failed: path not found
Complete solution
Fixes Infisical secret reference failures by verifying the exact project, environment, and folder path the reference points to. It covers reference syntax and permission scoping. Not for CLI login issues.
TL;DR
A failing secret reference points at a path that does not exist: wrong folder, wrong environment slug, or a typo in the secret name. List the secrets at the referenced path in the dashboard or CLI, correct the reference, and it resolves.
Error
infisical secret reference failed: path not foundSteps
- Parse the reference: identify the project, environment, folder path, and secret name it claims. Expected: four concrete components to verify.
- List that exact location: use the CLI or dashboard to list secrets in the referenced project, environment, and folder. Expected: you see what actually exists there.
- Fix the mismatch: correct the folder path, environment slug, or secret name in the reference. Expected: the reference now names a real secret.
- Check permissions: the referencing identity needs read access to both the referencing location and the referenced secret. Expected: no access gap on either side.
- Re-run the command that evaluates references. Expected: the reference resolves to the secret value.
When to use
- Infisical secret references fail with path not found
- Cross-project or cross-environment references
- After renaming folders or environments
When not to use
- CLI login failures (authentication, not references)
- The referenced secret exists but the value is wrong (source issue)
Tool compatibility
- Infisical secret references, CLI and dashboard; project, environment, and folder scoping
Variant phrasings
infisical reference wrong environment
Environment slugs are exact; a renamed environment breaks every reference to the old slug.
cross project secret reference fails
Both projects must grant the identity access; the path must exist in the target project.
Why it happens
References are late-bound name lookups across a four-part address space (project, environment, folder, name). Renames, moves, or typos in any part break the lookup, and the error reports the missing path without saying which part drifted.
