Solution skill
fraud agent failed mid-fraud-ring investigation on api quota cap
Complete solution
Keeps a fraud-ring investigation alive across API quota caps with quota budgeting, prioritized queries, and checkpointed resume. Use when a multi-step investigation exhausts its quota partway. Not for single-query rate limits.
TL;DR
Fraud-ring investigations are quota-hungry: every hop fans out into more queries. Budget the quota across investigation steps, run the highest-signal queries first, checkpoint after each hop, and pause cleanly when the cap nears instead of dying mid-graph.
fraud agent failed mid-fraud-ring investigation on api quota capUse this when
- A multi-step investigation exhausts its quota partway.
- The partial investigation graph is lost when the run dies.
- High-signal queries never run because the quota dies on broad ones.
Not for this skill when
- Single queries 429. That is rate limiting, a different fix.
- The quota is fine but queries are slow. That is a latency problem.
- The investigation logic is wrong. That is agent reasoning, not quota.
Steps
- Estimate the query cost per investigation hop before starting. Verify: you know roughly how many calls a full investigation needs.
- Prioritize queries by signal: direct links between suspects first, broad enrichment last. Verify: the most valuable queries run before any cap.
- Checkpoint the investigation graph after each hop. Verify: a paused investigation resumes with its graph intact.
- Set a quota watermark, for example 80 percent, that pauses new queries and finishes in-flight ones. Verify: the agent stops gracefully instead of erroring.
- Schedule the remainder in the next quota window or request a cap increase with the usage data. Verify: the investigation completes without emergency quota buys.
Variant phrasings
fraud ring investigation quota exhausted
Same failure, common phrasing.
api quota cap killed investigation
Symptom-level search.
agent ran out of quota mid investigation
Operational wording.
Compatibility: Any graph-style investigation across rate-limited APIs (risk, identity, device).
Why it happens
Ring investigations fan out exponentially: one suspect links to five accounts, each links to five more. Agents chase the graph enthusiastically and hit the quota cap two hops in, losing the partial graph if nothing was checkpointed. Budgeting turns the fan-out into a planned spend instead of a surprise.
Edge cases / pitfalls
- Pausing an investigation lets the ring keep operating. Weigh the quota pause against the fraud loss rate.
- Do not evade the cap by spreading queries across credentials or accounts. That violates provider terms.
- Document which hops were skipped so analysts know the graph is partial.
- A watermark that is too conservative leaves quota unused. Tune it from real usage.
