Grafana dashboard variable query failed: label values error for Prometheus fix

Export

Fixes a Grafana dashboard variable whose query fails to return label values from Prometheus by correcting the label_values query and the data source selection. Use when the variable dropdown is empty or errors while panels work. Not for a Prometheus server that is down for all queries.

TL;DR

Fix the variable query itself first. Check that the variable uses the Prometheus data source, that the metric name in label_values exists, and that the label name matches the metric labels exactly, then refresh the variable and save the dashboard. Variable queries run separately from panel queries, so healthy panels do not prove the variable definition is right.

Use this when

  • A dashboard variable dropdown is empty or shows a query error while Prometheus has the data.
  • The metric or its labels were renamed in the scrape configuration recently.
  • The dashboard was imported from another instance and variables broke while panels mostly work.

Not for this skill when

  • Prometheus itself is unreachable from Grafana for every dashboard. Fix the data source connection first.
  • The variable works but panels are slow. That is a query range and resolution issue, not a label lookup failure.

Steps

  1. Open the dashboard variables settings and inspect the failing variable query, noting the metric and label it requests. Verify: the query names one metric and one label in label_values form
  2. Run the same metric query in the Prometheus interface or Grafana Explore to confirm the metric exists and carries that label. Verify: the series list shows the label with values in the current time range
  3. Correct the metric name, the label name, or the data source on the variable to match what Explore returned. Verify: the variable preview in settings lists values instead of an error
  4. Check the variable time range and refresh setting, since a variable set to load only on dashboard load can keep stale empty results. Verify: changing the dashboard time range refreshes the variable values
  5. Save the dashboard and reload it as a viewer, selecting values in the variable to drive a panel. Verify: panels update for at least two different variable selections
  6. Audit the other Prometheus variables on the dashboard for the same renamed metric or label. Verify: every variable preview returns values

Why it happens

Label values are resolved live against the current series set, so anything that changes series naming, scrape relabeling, recording rules or retention, changes what the variable can return. Dashboards built against an older naming scheme fail at the variable layer first because it is the most name-sensitive part. Keeping metric and label names in version control alongside the dashboard JSON makes these breaks visible in review.

Grafana template variables backed by Prometheus call the label values API for a metric and label pair. A renamed metric after a scrape config change, a label that only exists on some series, or a variable left pointing at an old data source after an import all return an empty or erroring dropdown. Because the dashboard load depends on the variable, the failure can block every panel that uses it.

Field notes for Grafana specifically. The server log at startup and the provisioning and alerting sections are where instance level truth lives, and the dashboard JSON model view in the interface shows exactly what Grafana stored, which settles most arguments about what a panel is really querying. Grafana changes behaviour across versions in the alerting and provisioning areas especially, so record the version in every incident note. Instances managed as code should treat the Git copy of a dashboard as the source to fix, with interface edits treated as drafts to be ported back.

A Grafana habit that prevents repeat incidents is to keep one small health dashboard for the monitoring system itself, showing data source query success, alert evaluation state, and provisioning status. Monitoring the monitor sounds recursive, but the failures in this family are silent by nature, empty variables, unevaluated rules, missing dashboards, and a health view is the only surface where silence itself becomes visible. Checking it after every upgrade, migration, or provisioning change catches the breakage in the same hour it was introduced.

Variants and edge cases

Grafana label_values variable empty Prometheus fix

The empty-dropdown phrasing for the same lookup failure.

Grafana template variable query error metric renamed

The rename variant after a scrape config change.

Grafana variable data source wrong after import

The import variant where the variable points at a missing source.
