cannot post: period is closed" error when booking a prior-period adjustment
Fixes a cannot-post closed period error on a prior-period adjustment: choose between reopening with approval, posting to the next open period with disclosure, or a reversing dated entry. Use when the adjustment is real but the period is locked. Not for routine current-period entries.
TL;DR
A closed period is a control, not a dead end, and the right path depends on size and audit status. For a material adjustment in an unaudited period, reopen briefly under controller approval, post, and reclose with the change logged. For an immaterial one, post on the first day of the next open period with a memo naming the original period. Never backdate by editing the posting date in an import file to sneak past the lock.
"cannot post: period is closed" error when booking a prior-period adjustmentUse this when
- The adjustment belongs to a closed period and the ERP refuses the posting date.
- The period was closed as part of a normal month-end or year-end lock.
- The adjustment is documented, with amount, account, and reason known.
Not for this skill when
- The period is closed because the year is audited and filed. Do not reopen; use the next-period route with disclosure.
- The entry is actually a current-period item with a mistyped date. Correct the date instead.
Steps
- Confirm the period status and who closed it, and whether financials for that period were issued or the year audited. Verify: you know if reopening is even permitted
- Assess materiality of the adjustment against the closed period and document the assessment. Verify: a named approver has seen the amount and the assessment
- If reopening: reopen only that period under approval, post the adjustment, rerun period reports, and reclose, logging before and after balances. Verify: the reclosed trial balance differs only by the approved adjustment
- If not reopening: post on day one of the next open period with a memo naming the original period and the approval reference. Verify: the entry is findable from the closed period by its memo
- Attach the approval and the path chosen to the close checklist so the next reviewer sees why the period moved or the entry sits forward. Verify: the checklist entry is signed off

The how-to phrasing for the same block.
prior period adjustment period locked posting
When reopen versus forward-post is the question.
Compatibility: Period locks in NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Dynamics 365, SAP, and QuickBooks close-the-books workflows.
Why it happens
ERPs lock periods to protect issued numbers. The lock cannot distinguish a correcting adjustment from a careless backdate, so it blocks both. Organizations handle the tension with a materiality path: reopen under control for what changes decisions, forward-post with disclosure for what does not. The error is the system working as designed; the workflow around it is the fix.
Edge cases / pitfalls
- Reopening a period can invalidate bank recs and subledger closes tied to it. Re-verify each dependent close after reclosing.
- Some ERPs allow posting to a closed period with a specific override role instead of reopening. Prefer the override with an audit log over a full reopen when available.
- Repeated prior-period adjustments in the same account signal a cut-off problem at close. Fix the accrual process, not just the entries.
