how to get sitelinks for a documentation site

Export

Explains what earns Google sitelinks for documentation sites: site structure, navigation clarity, and brand-query strength. Use it when a docs site shows no sitelinks on brand searches. Not for forcing sitelinks on demand.

TL;DR

Sitelinks are earned, not requested: Google shows them when your site has a clear structure, strong brand-query traffic, and obvious top sections. For a docs site, that means a clean information architecture with named sections, consistent navigation, and enough brand searches that Google is confident about what searchers want next. There is no submission form and no markup that guarantees them.

how to get sitelinks for a documentation site

Use this when

  • Your docs site gets no sitelinks on brand-name searches
  • You are restructuring docs and want the architecture sitelink-friendly
  • You want to understand why a competitor has sitelinks and you dont
  • You are setting up a new docs site and want to build toward sitelinks

Not for this skill when

  • You need sitelinks for non-brand queries (Google rarely shows them there)
  • Your site is brand new with no brand search volume (too early)
  • You want to remove unwanted sitelinks (that is a demotion flow in Search Console)

Steps

  1. Build a clear section structure. Organize docs into 4 to 8 named top-level sections with descriptive titles. Expected: an architecture a stranger could navigate and Google can parse.
Sections: short, descriptive names ("API Reference", "Guides", "Tutorials").
Every page lives in exactly one section.
  1. Make navigation consistent and crawlable. The same nav on every page, as plain HTML links, with the section names as anchor text. Expected: Google understands the hierarchy from the link structure alone.
Checklist: identical nav sitewide, real links not JS-only,
section names as link text.
  1. Grow brand-query volume. Sitelinks appear for navigational brand searches; more people searching your brand plus "docs" signals Google to expand the result. Expected: rising brand-query impressions in GSC.
Drivers: product usage, community mentions, content marketing.
Measure: GSC queries containing your brand name, trend over months.
  1. Keep section landing pages strong. Each section index should be a real page with a description and the full topic list, not a thin auto-generated list. Expected: section pages that deserve to be sitelink destinations.
Section page: what this section covers, who it is for, linked topics.
These pages are the sitelink candidates.
  1. Wait and verify. Sitelinks appear when Google's confidence crosses its threshold, usually after months of consistent structure and brand traffic. Expected: sitelinks on the brand query, linking to your top sections.
Check: search your brand name monthly in incognito.
Timeline: typically 3 to 12 months for an established docs site.

Variant phrasings

Sitelinks not showing for my site

Usually a structure or brand-volume problem; work steps 1 through 3 and wait.

How does Google choose sitelinks

Algorithmically, from site structure and user behavior on brand queries; no manual submission exists.

Documentation site information architecture for SEO

Named sections, consistent nav, strong section landing pages; sitelinks are the reward.

Why it happens

Sitelinks exist to save navigational searchers a click: someone searching your brand usually wants a specific section, and Google expands the result when it is confident about which sections matter. Confidence comes from two signals: a clean hierarchy that makes the sections obvious, and behavioral data showing searchers actually go to those sections. Without structure, Google cant identify candidates; without brand traffic, it has no reason to expand anything.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • You cannot force sitelinks; anyone selling that is selling nothing.
  • Unwanted sitelinks can be demoted in Search Console, but the demotion is a suggestion, not a command.
  • Site structure changes can temporarily lose existing sitelinks; they usually return once Google reprocesses.
  • Sitelinks need the site to rank first for the brand query; fix brand-query ranking before worrying about sitelinks.
  • Deep pages almost never become sitelinks; only top-level sections qualify.
