Solution skill
agent's savings report counted the promo credits as real savings
Complete solution
Fixes a savings report inflated by promo credits by separating credits from true cost reductions. Use when a savings report counts promotional credits as savings. Not for reports with no credits involved.
TL;DR
The agent compared this month's net bill (reduced by one-time promo credits) against last month's and called the difference savings, but credits expire while real savings persist. Split the report: true savings (rightsizing, commitments, eliminations) versus credits (temporary, expiring). Only the first category compounds; the second is a cliff.
Error
agent's savings report counted the promo credits as real savingsSteps
- Confirm the inflation: break the reported savings into credits versus structural changes. Expected: the credit portion is quantified.
- Check the credit expiry dates. Expected: the cliff date when the "savings" vanish is known.
- Rewrite the report with two sections: recurring savings and one-time credits, each labeled. Expected: the report is honest about what persists.
- Change the agent's savings math to exclude credits from the savings total (report them separately). Expected: future reports separate the categories.
- Re-run the savings report. Expected: the savings number reflects real reductions only.
When to use
- A savings report includes promo or service credits.
- Reported savings will vanish when credits expire.
- Auditing savings-report accuracy.
When not to use
- No credits are involved (the savings are real).
- The report already separates credits.
- The question is gross versus net (a different metric issue).
Tool compatibility
AWS Cost Explorer, billing reports (current 2026 releases). Applies to savings-reporting agents.
Variant phrasings
"savings" that expire with the credits
Separate recurring savings from one-time credits.
promo credits inflating the savings number
Credits are not savings. Report them apart.
savings cliff when credits run out
Label the expiry so the cliff is expected, not a surprise.
Why it happens
Credits reduce the bill exactly like savings do, so naive month-over-month math conflates them. But credits are a vendor subsidy with an expiry date, while true savings come from using less or committing smarter. Reporting them together lets the team believe the cost structure improved when only the invoice did. The honest report shows both, because the cliff matters for planning.
