Solution skill
inventory subledger valuation is higher than the GL inventory account after the cycle count adjustment
Complete solution
Fixes an inventory subledger valuation higher than the GL inventory account after a cycle count adjustment: trace the count adjustment postings in both layers, find the value posted to the subledger only, and align the GL posting or the count configuration. Use for perpetual inventory close. Not for a shrinkage investigation on physical stock.
TL;DR
A cycle count changes quantity in the inventory subledger immediately, but its value reaches the GL only through the count adjustment posting, which can fail, post to a different period, or use a different cost than the subledger valuation. Pull the cycle count adjustment documents for the count date and compare, item by item, the subledger value change with the GL journal that should mirror it. The excess in the subledger is usually one of three things: adjustments for items whose GL posting errored on a closed period, a standard-cost revaluation the subledger applied but the GL posted elsewhere, or count gains on items the GL maps to a different inventory account. Correct by posting the missing GL side from the adjustment document, or fixing the account determination so the next count posts cleanly both sides.
inventory subledger valuation is higher than the GL inventory account after the cycle count adjustmentUse this when
- After a cycle count, the inventory valuation report exceeds the GL inventory balance.
- The count covered high-value or standard-cost items, or spanned a period boundary.
- Some count adjustments show errors or pending status in the warehouse or inventory module.
Not for this skill when
- Physical stock is missing and the books agree. That is a shrinkage and security matter, not a valuation reconciliation.
- The GL is higher than the subledger. The causes mirror but the search starts with GL-only journals to inventory.
Steps
- Run the inventory valuation and the GL inventory balance at the same cut-off and quantify the gap by warehouse or item group if the tools allow. Verify: the gap is stated per location or group, not just as one global number
- List every cycle count adjustment posted since the last clean reconciliation, with its subledger value change per item. Verify: the adjustment population behind the gap is enumerated
- For each adjustment, find its GL journal and compare value, period and inventory account used. Verify: adjustments with missing, mis-period or mis-accounted GL postings are identified
- Correct each one: post the missing GL entry from the adjustment document, or reverse and repost with the right account determination. Verify: subledger and GL reflect the same value for every corrected adjustment
- Fix the account determination or period handling that caused the failures, then re-run the valuation comparison. Verify: the balances tie and the next count's configuration is corrected

Why it happens
Quantity and value live in different engines. The warehouse count updates quantities and the subledger valuation at the item's cost the moment it is approved, optimised for operations. The GL posting is a second, accounting step governed by account determination, period status and cost rules. Any friction in that second step - a locked period, a missing account mapping for a new item group, a revaluation rule - leaves the operational truth ahead of the financial record, and the valuation report exposes the gap at close.
Edge cases / pitfalls
- Count gains are as suspicious as losses: a gain with no GL credit often means the original receipt was never valued.
- Standard cost items revalue on cost changes between count and posting; freeze the comparison at the count timestamp.
- High-value cycle counts near period end should be scheduled so both postings land in the same period by design.
