Immutable solution version
agent profiled the wrong service - the same deployment name exists in two namespaces
Complete solution
Prevents profiling the wrong service by verifying identity before capturing. Use when metrics do not match the expected service. Key trigger: profile data that does not look like the target service.
agent profiled the wrong service - the same deployment name exists in two namespaces
TL;DR
The agent attached to a same-named deployment in the wrong namespace and profiled a stranger. Always verify identity first: namespace, labels, pod IPs, and a known traffic signature. A profile of the wrong service is worse than no profile because it looks authoritative.
agent profiled the wrong service - the same deployment name exists in two namespacesSteps
Verify the target: kubectl get deployments --all-namespaces | grep [name], and confirm which namespace you meant. Expected: You see the duplicate.
Check what the agent actually profiled: pod names, IPs, and namespace in the captured data. Expected: It points at the wrong namespace.
Re-run the profile against the verified target: namespace-qualified selectors, explicit pod names. Expected: The new profile shows the expected traffic shape.
Add an identity check to the profiling harness: assert namespace and a canary label before capturing. Expected: The harness refuses to profile the wrong target.
Clean up any conclusions drawn from the wrong profile; they describe a different service. Expected: Decisions are re-based on real data.
When to use
- profile data does not match the expected service
- the same deployment name exists in multiple namespaces
- an agent profiles by name without a namespace
When not to use
- names are unique cluster-wide (then this cannot happen)
- the data looks right (verify anyway; it is cheap)
- you profile by pod IP directly (already unambiguous)
Tool compatibility
- Kubernetes
- any profiler
Variant phrasings
- "profiled wrong service same name namespace"
- "agent profiled wrong namespace"
- "duplicate deployment name profiling"
Why it happens
Kubernetes names are only unique within a namespace, and teams reuse names like 'api' or 'worker' everywhere. An agent that resolves a name without a namespace gets whichever the context defaults to, profiles it confidently, and produces a beautiful analysis of the wrong system.
Edge cases
- kubectl context defaults are per-user; the agent's context may differ from yours
- service meshes can route the profiler's own traffic in confusing ways; verify with pod IPs
- staging and prod often share names deliberately; that is where this bites hardest
