Pinecone diagnosis: no way to return every vector in one call
Complete solution
Symptom: you need all vectors and query cannot do it. By design there is no select-all; page through list plus fetch in batches, or take a backup for a static copy. Not the full reference manual.

The fix
Diagnosis
Symptom
Attempting to retrieve every vector in an index; query requires a vector or id and top_k caps results.
Likely cause
Pinecone is a similarity engine, not a table scan. There is intentionally no return-everything query.
Confirm it
Confirm what you actually need: a live iteration (migration, audit) or a static copy (backup). The answer differs.
Fix
- Live iteration over a serverless index:
listrecord ids in the namespace (paginated), thenfetchthem in batches. - Static copy of the whole index: create a backup (collections on pods; export paths on serverless).
- For ongoing sync, track ingested ids in your own store at write time instead of dumping the index later.
Verify the fix
After a list-plus-fetch pass, compare the fetched count to describe_index_stats totals for the namespace.
When to use this
- This covers exactly what the title says: Pinecone diagnosis.
- You are setting this up for the first time, or auditing an existing setup.
- You want the key gotchas in one place before you start.
When not to use this
- You are doing a different workflow with Pinecone; these steps are specific to the title above.
- You need the full reference docs; this is the short path, not the manual.
Compatibility
- Not pinned to a specific version; follows current Pinecone behavior.
Evidence
Pinecone's return-all-vectors troubleshooting page states there is no single-query way to return all vectors and prescribes list-then-fetch in batches, or a backup for a static copy. Verified against live docs 2026-09-26.
