dbt jinja error: dict object has no attribute

Export

Fixes jinja attribute errors on dicts in dbt models and macros for analytics engineers and repair agents. Use when compilation fails with dict object has no attribute naming a key. Not for undefined variables or missing model refs.

TL;DR

You treated a dict like an object with a missing key. In jinja, mydict.somekey raises when the key is absent. Switch the access to mydict.get('somekey') or guard with an if key in dict check. Find every place the dict is built and confirm the key actually exists there.

Error

dbt jinja error: dict object has no attribute

Steps

  1. Read the error line: it names the attribute, e.g. dict object has no attribute 'database'. Search your model and macros for that attribute access. Expected: You find the exact spot, usually something like relation.database or config.get(...) chained into dot access.

  2. Trace where the dict comes from. Common sources: var() returning a dict, adapter.get_relation returning None-ish, or a hand-built dict missing a key for one code path. Expected: You know which dict is missing which key, and for which inputs.

  3. Replace dot access with .get('key') plus a sensible default, or add {% if 'key' in my_dict %} around the access. Expected: dbt compile passes on the model; the missing-key path takes the default instead of raising.

  4. Run dbt compile --select the model, then dbt run --select it to confirm runtime behavior too. Expected: Compile clean, run succeeds, downstream refs resolve.

When to use

  • compilation fails with dict object has no attribute during dbt compile, run, or test
  • you access var() or config values with dot notation
  • macro code does relation.database or similar on a possibly-partial dict

When not to use

  • the error is 'X' is undefined (that is a missing variable, not a dict key)
  • the attribute is on a model ref that does not exist (that is a ref error)
  • the failure is at warehouse runtime, not jinja render

Tool compatibility

  • dbt-core all recent versions, jinja2 behavior is the trigger
  • dbt Cloud shows the same compile error in the IDE
  • dbt compile reproduces it without touching the warehouse

Variant phrasings

dict object has no element

Same family, but for list index access like my_list[3] on a short list. Fix with a length check or a default.

NoneType object has no attribute in jinja

The dict itself was None, not just missing a key. Guard the whole object: {% if my_dict %} before touching its keys.

Why it happens

Jinja lets you use dot notation on dicts as shorthand for key access, but unlike python attribute access it raises AttributeError instead of returning anything falsy when the key is missing. dbt surfaces that as a compile error. It usually means one code path builds the dict without the key your template assumes.

Edge cases

  • var('my_var') returning different shapes per target is a classic trigger; print the var with dbt compile and a debug log line to see the real shape.
  • Chained access like a.b.c fails on the first missing key; fix from the leftmost object outward.
