salesforce lead conversion failed duplicate rule signup
Complete solution
Fixes Salesforce lead conversion failures when a duplicate rule blocks signup conversions. For teams converting trial signups into contacts and accounts. Trigger: conversion errors naming a duplicate rule. Not for validation rule failures or missing required fields.
TL;DR
A trial signup will not convert to a contact because a Salesforce duplicate rule matched it against an existing record and blocked the conversion. The fix: open the duplicate rule the error names, decide whether the match is real, and either merge the records or tune the rule so legitimate signups convert. For the stuck signup, convert with the duplicate warning bypassed after a human reviews the match.
The error
Lead conversion failed: "Duplicates detected by rule: Signup Duplicate Check"
Error: DUPLICATES_DETECTED on convertSteps
- Read the error for the rule name. The conversion error names the exact duplicate rule that fired. Expected output: one rule name, for example the signup duplicate check.
- Inspect the matched record. Open the existing contact or lead the rule matched against. Expected output: a side-by-side view of the signup and the existing record.
- Decide: same person or not. If it is the same person, merge or convert into the existing account. If it is a different person who happens to match (same name, same company), the rule is too loose. Expected output: a merge decision or a rule-tuning decision.
- Unstick the signup. With the match reviewed, convert the lead, bypassing the duplicate warning for this reviewed case. Expected output: the lead converts to a contact and account.
- Tune the rule if it misfires. Tighten matching (email exact match instead of fuzzy name match) so real signups stop getting blocked. Expected output: new signups convert without tripping the rule.
When to use
- Lead conversion fails and the error names a duplicate rule
- Trial signups pile up as unconverted leads
- The rule was recently created or edited and conversions broke after
When not to use
- Conversion fails on a validation rule: different rule type, different fix
- Required fields are missing: fill the fields, not the dedupe
- The lead converts but lands on the wrong account: assignment problem, not duplicates
Tool compatibility
Salesforce duplicate rules and matching rules on leads, contacts, and accounts. Works in Lightning and Classic; the bypass and merge flows are the same in both.

trial signup stuck as lead

Why it happens
Duplicate rules exist to keep the CRM clean, but signup data is messy: the same person signs up with a personal email, then a work email, then a typo'd work email. Fuzzy matching catches the near-matches and blocks the conversion, which is the rule doing its job. The failure mode is when the rule is tuned for a clean data-entry world and applied to self-serve signup data. Signups need exact-match rules (same email means same person) with fuzzy matching reserved for human review, not for blocking.
Edge cases
- The matched record is owned by another rep: converting into their account needs their buy-in. Route the review to the owner.
- Person accounts: duplicate rules behave differently against person accounts. Test the rule against that record type specifically.
- The rule fires on converted leads only: check whether the rule scope includes the converted state.
- Bulk conversion jobs: one bad match can fail a whole batch. Convert in smaller batches with per-record error handling.
