Solution skill

Barman restore failed "failed to retrieve WAL segment from archive" error

Version 1

Complete solution

A restore missing a WAL segment means the archive has a gap at the segment the recovery needs: check the archive for the segment and its neighbours, find whether the gap is an archiving failure from the source database, a retention sweep that removed it, or an archive copy that lagged. Use when a Barman restore of a PostgreSQL database needing WAL replay. Not for a segment that exists in the archive under a.

TL;DR

A restore missing a WAL segment means the archive has a gap at the segment the recovery needs: check the archive for the segment and its neighbours, find whether the gap is an archiving failure from the source database, a retention sweep that removed it, or an archive copy that lagged. Recovery can only proceed to the last continuous point, so either supply the segment from the source or another copy, or set the restore's target to the point the continuous archive actually reaches.

Barman restore failed "failed to retrieve WAL segment from archive" error

Use this when

  • The job or restore fails with this symptom: Barman restore failed with failed to retrieve WAL segment from archive.
  • You are working on a Barman restore of a PostgreSQL database needing WAL replay and the failure repeats on the same target or schedule.
  • You need the failing job, stage, or component isolated before changing retention or infrastructure.

Not for this skill when

  • A segment that exists in the archive under a different timeline after a promotion, where the fix is restoring along the correct timeline.
  • The error text names a different product, stage, or root cause. Match the verbatim error first and use that skill.

Steps

  1. Note the exact segment name the restore requested and list the archive around that segment. Verify: the gap's position and size are known
  2. Check the source database's archive status and Barman's receive logs for that segment's window. Verify: whether the segment ever arrived is established
  3. Look for retention or copy events that could have removed or delayed that segment specifically. Verify: a removal cause is found or ruled out
  4. Supply the segment from an alternate copy if one exists, or retarget the restore to the last continuous recovery point and document the data window lost. Verify: the restore proceeds to a proven point

postgres barman recovery failed wal segment timeline retention

The timeline phrasing.

Compatibility: Barman restores and WAL archive completeness

Why it happens

Point-in-time recovery is a chain: base backup plus an unbroken WAL sequence. One missing segment caps recovery at the gap no matter how much later WAL exists, and the restore discovers it only when replay reaches the hole, which is why archive continuity checks belong in backup verification, not restore day.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Retention that counts from the base backup's age can eat WAL the newest backup still needs; align WAL retention with the oldest restorable base.
  • A timeline change after a failover makes same-named segments different files; the archive check must include timeline in the name.
