Solution skill

agent's logs command returned 10,000 lines: how to bound output

Version 1

Complete solution

This skill bounds log output for SRE agents that pull thousands of lines and miss the error. It covers tail limits, time windows, and severity filtering, plus making bounded reads the default in the agent log tools. Use it when agent incident summaries get vague after huge log reads.

TL;DR

An agent that pulls 10,000 log lines drowns its own context and still misses the error, because the relevant lines are a tiny fraction of the dump. Bound every log read with line limits, time windows, and severity filters, and teach the agent to narrow before it widens. The fix is in how the agent asks for logs, not in the logging system.

kubectl logs deployment/[DEPLOYMENT] -n [NAMESPACE]
... (10,000 lines returned, error buried somewhere in the middle)

Steps

  1. Cap every log call with a tail limit so the response fits in context.
kubectl logs deployment/[DEPLOYMENT] -n [NAMESPACE] --tail=200

Expected: at most 200 lines come back. The agent can read all of them instead of skimming a flood, and the call is fast.

  1. Narrow by time to the incident window instead of dumping history.
kubectl logs deployment/[DEPLOYMENT] -n [NAMESPACE] --since=15m --tail=500

Expected: only logs from the last 15 minutes. If the incident started an hour ago, the window moves with it; the point is the agent always names a window.

  1. Filter server-side or pipe-side for severity before reading.
kubectl logs deployment/[DEPLOYMENT] -n [NAMESPACE] --since=30m --tail=2000 | grep -i -E 'error|exception|traceback|fatal' | tail -n 100

Expected: the error lines surface first. The agent reads 100 relevant lines instead of 10,000 mixed ones.

  1. Make bounded reads the default in the agent's tool wrapper: every logs call requires a tail limit and a time window, with a hard cap the agent cannot override per call.

Expected: audit logs of agent sessions show no unbounded log reads. When the agent needs more, it runs a second bounded query with a shifted window instead of one giant pull.

When to use

  • An agent's log reads return thousands of lines and its summaries get vague or miss the error.
  • You are building or configuring the log-reading tools an SRE agent uses.
  • Log-heavy incidents where the agent burns context before it starts reasoning.

When not to use

  • A human is reading the logs directly (they can skim; this is about agent context limits).
  • You need a full export for compliance or postmortem archives (that is a batch job, not an agent read).
  • The log volume is genuinely small (under a few hundred lines per query).

Why it happens

Agents default to the simplest invocation, kubectl logs with no flags, which returns everything the kubelet has buffered. Unlike a human skimming a terminal, the agent pays full context price for every line, and the important error competes with thousands of routine info lines for attention. The failure mode is silent: the summary looks plausible but is built from the first and last chunks the model could fit, not from the error in the middle.

Edge cases

  • --tail counts per container; multi-container pods need -c [CONTAINER] or the agent mixes streams and misattributes errors.
  • Previous-container logs (-p) matter for CrashLoopBackOff; bound those too, they can be just as large.
  • If the error predates the kubelet's buffer, no flag helps; the agent must query the centralized log store with the same time-window discipline.
  • Structured JSON logs let the agent filter by level field instead of grep; prefer the level filter when the format supports it.
