Solution skill
agent compared this year's USD spend to last year's EUR spend, the currency mismatch hid a 20% increase
Complete solution
Normalizes billing currency before comparing spend across periods or accounts. Use when a cost report compared amounts in different currencies and hid a real increase. Not for single-currency accounts where no conversion happens.
TL;DR
Never compare raw amounts across currencies. Convert every figure to one reporting currency using the billing period's rate (or the CUR's billing-currency column), print the currency next to every number, and re-run the comparison. The "flat" spend was a 20% increase wearing a currency costume.
agent compared this year's usd spend to last year's eur spend, the currency mismatch hid a 20 percent increaseUse this when
- A cost report compares periods or accounts with different billing currencies.
- Spend looks flat or down but the invoice total disagrees.
- The report prints amounts with no currency labels.
Not for this skill when
- All accounts bill in one currency. There is nothing to normalize.
- You are comparing within a single invoice; the currency is already consistent.
Steps
- Find the billing currency on each invoice or CUR row involved. Verify: confirm which figures are USD and which are EUR.
- Pick one reporting currency and convert every figure using the rate from the relevant billing period, not today's rate.
- Re-run the comparison on converted numbers. Verify: the hidden increase (or decrease) is now visible.
- Fix the report template: every amount prints with its currency code, and cross-currency comparisons convert explicitly.
- Add a guard to the reporting script: refuse to compare amounts with different currency codes unless a conversion step ran.
- Document the chosen reporting currency and rate source so the next report inherits the rule.

Compatibility: Any multi-currency billing (AWS CUR billing-currency columns, Azure EA, GCP billing export).
Why it happens
Amounts are just numbers in a spreadsheet until someone labels them. The agent compared the numbers, not the money, and EUR-to-USD drift did the rest. A 20% increase hid inside a currency move that nobody annotated.
Edge cases / pitfalls
- Exchange rates move within a billing period; for large amounts, use the period-average rate, not a single day's.
- Some invoices show both the billing currency and the local currency; be sure which one the report used.
- Refunds and credits in a different currency than the original charge need the same conversion treatment.
