DocuSign embedded signing returns "USER_LACKS_PERMISSIONS"
Fixes DocuSign embedded signing failing with USER_LACKS_PERMISSIONS when the API user cannot create a recipient view. Use when envelope creation succeeds but the signing URL request fails. Key trigger: the token's user has API access but no sender permission on the account.
Fix DocuSign embedded signing "USERLACKSPERMISSIONS"
TL;DR
Make sure the API user is a sender on the account and the OAuth grant included the impersonation scope. Envelope creation can succeed while the recipient-view call fails, because creating the signing URL needs sender permission on top of API access. Fix the permission or the scope, re-consent, and request the view again.
{
"errorCode": "USER_LACKS_PERMISSIONS",
"message": "This user lacks sufficient permissions to access this resource."
}Check the user in your JWT claim under Users in the Admin console. They need send permission, not just API access. Expected: the user shows as an active sender.
Confirm the consent grant included the impersonation scope. If the scope changed since consent was granted, re-run the consent flow. Expected: the consent record shows the impersonation scope.
Request the recipient view in the same user context that created the envelope. Expected: the API returns a signing URL.
Use this when
- envelope creation works but the embedded signing URL request fails
- the error appears only for some users (the ones without send permission)
- you recently changed OAuth scopes
Not for this skill when
- envelope creation itself fails (fix that first)
- the signing URL works but the ceremony shows an error (a recipient or document problem)
- you are using remote signing links instead of embedded (no recipient view needed)
Variant phrasings
- docusign embedded signing USERLACKSPERMISSIONS recipient view
- docusign create recipient view permission denied api user
- docusign sender permission required embedded signing url
- docusign jwt user cannot create signing url
Why it happens
DocuSign splits permissions: creating an envelope needs API access, but generating an embedded signing URL acts on behalf of the sender, so the user needs sender rights. Service users created for API work often get API access without send permission, and the failure only appears at the signing-URL step.
Edge cases
- Brand and user-level settings can further restrict who may send; check both.
- The recipient view URL expires quickly; generate it at click time, not at envelope creation.
- If the user needs the permission only temporarily, grant it, generate, and revoke with a note.
- Test with the exact user your production flow impersonates, not your admin account.
