Solution skill
stripe radar rule failed in test mode but works in live mode
Complete solution
Explains why a Stripe Radar rule misbehaves in test mode while working in live. Covers simulated test attributes, live-only fields, and validating rule logic with the rule tester. Not for rules broken in both modes.
TL;DR
Test mode uses simulated card attributes, so conditions on fields like real card country or AVS results never match there. Test the rule logic with the rule tester using representative values instead of relying on test charges. Validate real behavior in live mode with the rule set to review-only before trusting it.
stripe radar rule failed in test mode but works in live modeUse this when
- A rule never matches test payments but matches live ones.
- The rule tester shows skipped conditions in test mode.
- You are developing rules against test traffic.
Not for this skill when
- The rule fails in live too. That is a logic problem, not a mode problem.
- The rule fails in test for a documented test-only reason. Read the test docs.
- You need test traffic to exercise the rule fully. Use the rule tester instead.
Steps
- Identify which condition in the rule references a live-only attribute, such as real card country or network risk data. Verify: the tester marks that condition skipped on test payments.
- Open the rule tester and supply representative values for those attributes manually. Verify: the rule evaluates the full condition and matches as expected.
- Confirm the rule logic is sound against the simulated evaluation. Verify: true and false cases both behave correctly in the tester.
- Deploy the rule in live mode set to review-only first. Verify: live payments start matching it in the review queue.
- Only move it to block after the review-only period proves the match rate. Verify: the false-positive rate is acceptable.
Variant phrasings
radar rule test mode not matching
Shorter phrasing.
stripe radar rule works live not test
Contrast phrasing.
radar test mode rule skipped condition
Tester-focused phrasing.
Compatibility: Stripe Radar custom rules; test mode uses simulated payment attributes. The rule tester is available in the Dashboard.
Why it happens
Test mode exists to exercise payment flows, not to replicate the full Radar signal set. Attributes that depend on real network data are simulated or empty, so conditions on them cannot match. The rule is fine; the test data is thin.
Edge cases / pitfalls
- A rule that looks dead in test may be over-matching in live. Always soak new rules in review-only.
- Test clock scenarios do not generate realistic Radar signals either. Do not tune thresholds on them.
- If the rule depends on a field your integration never sends, it will fail in both modes. Check your payload, not just the mode.
