mixpanel distinct_id undefined on mobile webview error
Fixes Mixpanel events firing with an undefined distinct_id inside mobile webviews, by waiting for the native bridge to supply the user ID before initializing or identifying. Not for native SDK issues, and not for web-only Mixpanel setups.
mixpanel distinct_id undefined on mobile webview error
TL;DR
The webview loads and fires events before the native side injects the user ID, so early events carry no identity. Confirm the native bridge actually exposes the user ID, then gate Mixpanel init and identify on the bridge callback so no track call fires first. Verify in Mixpanel Live View that events arrive with the distinct_id set.
mixpanel distinct_id undefined on mobile webview errorUse this when
- Mixpanel events from the mobile webview show undefined distinct_id
- Web events have IDs but webview events do not
- The problem is worse on cold starts
Not for this skill when
- Native Mixpanel SDK identity issues (different SDK, different fix)
- Desktop web Mixpanel with missing IDs (check the web init)
- Events not arriving at all (delivery, not identity)
Steps
Step 1: Confirm the bridge provides the ID
Check the native-to-webview bridge and confirm it exposes the current user ID to JavaScript. Expected: you can read the ID from the bridge in the webview console.
Step 2: Gate init on the bridge
Wait for the bridge callback or ready event before initializing Mixpanel or calling identify. Expected: no Mixpanel call executes before the ID is known.
Step 3: Identify before tracking
Call identify with the bridged user ID before any track call fires. Expected: the first tracked event already carries the distinct_id.
Step 4: Verify in Live View
Open Mixpanel Live View, trigger webview events, and inspect their distinct_id. Expected: every event shows the correct user ID.
Step 5: Handle logout and switching
On logout or account switch, reset Mixpanel identity and re-identify on the next login. Expected: no cross-user contamination of events.
Tool compatibility
Mixpanel JavaScript SDK in mobile webviews (WKWebView, Android WebView); native bridge interfaces; Mixpanel Live View.
Variant phrasings
Variant 1
mixpanel webview distinct_id undefined
Variant 2
mixpanel javascript sdk mobile webview no user id
Variant 3
mixpanel track before identify webview race
Why it happens
A webview is a browser without the usual timing guarantees: the page can start executing JavaScript before the native container has finished injecting its bridge, and analytics code that runs at page load wins the race against identity. The events fire, Mixpanel accepts them, but with no distinct_id they cannot be attributed to anyone. It looks like a Mixpanel bug and gets debugged as one, but the SDK is faithfully reporting exactly what it was told: nothing. The fix is sequencing at the integration layer, holding analytics until the bridge delivers identity, because the SDK cannot know what the native side has not provided yet.
Edge cases / pitfalls
- WKWebView and Android WebView inject bridges at different lifecycle points; test both.
- Super properties set before identify can also carry stale identity; set them after.
- If the bridge is unavailable (old app versions), fall back to a generated ID rather than undefined.
