your computer can't connect to the remote computer because the remote desktop gateway server is temporarily unavailable

Version 1

Complete solution

This skill troubleshoots the RD Gateway error your computer can't connect to the remote computer because the remote desktop gateway server is temporarily unavailable, which usually means the gateway is down or unreachable from the client. It guides helpdesk staff to verify gateway reachability, certificate health, and the client's gateway settings. Not for authentication failures past the gateway.

Error message

Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because the Remote Desktop Gateway server is temporarily unavailable or unreachable.

TL;DR

The client cannot reach the RD Gateway at all, so check the gateway host itself first. Verify the gateway server is running and its certificate is valid, confirm the client can resolve and reach the gateway address, and correct the gateway name in the RDP file if it changed.

Steps

  1. Ping and resolve the gateway hostname from the client machine. Expected: You see whether this is DNS or reachability.

  2. Check the gateway server's RD Gateway service status and its SSL certificate expiry. Expected: The service is running and the certificate is valid, or you find the fault.

  3. Restart the gateway service or renew the certificate as needed, then verify the gateway port is open from the client network. Expected: The port test succeeds.

  4. Have the user retry the RDP connection with the corrected gateway name. Expected: The gateway connects and prompts for credentials.

When to use

  • The exact message names the gateway as unavailable
  • All users fail at once (gateway-side problem)
  • The failure started after a certificate renewal or gateway migration

When not to use

  • The user reaches the gateway but credentials fail (authentication issue)
  • Only one user fails (check their RDP file and network)
  • Direct RDP without a gateway works (the gateway path is the problem, confirmed)

Why this happens

RD Gateway tunnels RDP over HTTPS, so it depends on DNS, the gateway service, and a valid server certificate. An expired certificate or a stopped service makes the gateway unreachable with this exact message even though the internal RDP hosts are fine.

Edge cases

  • Clients with a stale hosts file or old RDP file can point at a decommissioned gateway name.
  • Load-balanced gateway farms need the certificate on every node, not just one.
