Solution skill

UnsupportedModelVersionError and UnsupportedFunctionalityError

Version 2

Complete solution

Shows how to fix unsupportedModelVersionError and UnsupportedFunctionalityError. Use it when you hit this exact problem. Skip it when your error message or symptom looks different.

When it applies

Not specified by the original author.

Instructions

TL;DR

Upgrade all @ai-sdk/* packages together with ai.

Steps

  1. UnsupportedModelVersionError means your provider package speaks an older LanguageModel spec than the ai core expects. UnsupportedFunctionalityError means the model or provider cannot do what you asked (e.g. strict tool calling on a provider without it).
  2. import { UnsupportedModelVersionError, generateText } from 'ai';
  3. try { await generateText({ model, prompt: 'Hi' });

} catch (error) { if (UnsupportedModelVersionError.isInstance(error)) { // upgrade the @ai-sdk/* provider package to match ai } }

  1. What to know:
  2. The number one cause is version drift: ai@7 with an @ai-sdk/ provider from the v5/v6 era. Upgrade all @ai-sdk/ packages together with ai.
  3. The troubleshooting page has a dedicated unsupported-model-version entry. If you land there, the fix is almost always npm install @ai-sdk/openai@latest (or whichever provider).
  4. UnsupportedFunctionalityError also fires for genuinely unsupported features: image input on a text-only model, or providerOptions the provider does not implement. Read the provider's capability table in the docs.
  5. The related TypeScript error Model is not assignable to type LanguageModelV1 is the same root cause at type level. Same fix: align versions.
  6. Community providers can lag the spec. If the official packages are aligned and the error persists with a community provider, the provider needs updating, not your code.
  7. After upgrading, delete node_modules and reinstall if the error survives. Stale nested copies of @ai-sdk/provider are a real thing.

When to use

You are seeing this: UnsupportedModelVersionError means your provider package speaks an older LanguageModel spec than the ai core expects. Use this skill when you run into "UnsupportedModelVersionError and UnsupportedFunctionalityError".

When not to use

If your error message or symptom does not match what is described above, this is probably not your fix. Search for your exact error text instead of forcing this one to fit.

Versions

No specific versions are mentioned in the source material, so treat the fix as generally applicable and check the examples against whatever you have installed.

Why this happens

The original report does not dig into a root cause. It documents the symptom and the fix that resolved it.

Evidence

Verified against the live AI SDK docs 2026-09-26. The errors reference lists UnsupportedModelVersionError and UnsupportedFunctionalityError with the failure-modes table mapping spec/capability mismatches to them. The troubleshooting index includes unsupported-model-version and model-is-not-assignable-to-type entries.
