Solution skill
fraud agent backfill job failed on fraud schema migration
Complete solution
Repairs schema-migration backfill failures with versioned schemas, per-version migrators, and resumable idempotent backfill jobs. Use when backfills die on renamed fields or leave half-converted history. Not for volume-driven backfill failures.
TL;DR
Schema migrations break backfills because the old events do not match the new schema and the job dies halfway, leaving a partial history. Version the schema with a migration path: backfill jobs read the event's schema version, transform through registered migrators, and write in the current schema. Partial runs resume from the last committed offset instead of restarting the whole history from scratch.
fraud agent backfill job failed on fraud schema migrationUse this when
- Backfills fail right after a field rename or type change.
- Old events crash a parser written for the new schema.
- A failed backfill leaves half the history in the new format.
Not for this skill when
- The backfill fails on volume, not schema. That is a throughput problem.
- Live ingestion broke too. That is a deploy problem, fix the deploy first.
Steps
- Version every schema and stamp events with their version at write time. Verify: old events carry a version the new reader recognizes.
- Write migrators per version jump: pure functions from old shape to new, tested on samples. Verify: a sample of version three events migrates cleanly to version five with field values intact.
- Make the backfill idempotent and resumable: commit offsets as it goes, restart from the last commit. Verify: killing the job mid-run resumes without duplicates or gaps.
- Validate after the run: row counts and a spot-check of migrated fields against source. Verify: counts match and sampled fields are correct.
Variant phrasings
backfill broke after schema change
Migration phrasing.
old events fail new schema parser
Compatibility phrasing.
partial backfill after migration
Recovery phrasing.
Compatibility: Works with any event store that keeps raw events. The migrator pattern fits batch and streaming backfills.
Why it happens
The migration changes the live path and the backfill is an afterthought tested on new-shaped data only. Old events hit the new parser, throw, and the job dies with half the history converted.
Edge cases / pitfalls
- Renames need a mapping table, not guesswork. Keep it with the migrator.
- Type changes can lose precision. Document the conversion explicitly.
- Some old events are corrupt beyond migration. Quarantine them, do not silently drop.
- Test migrators on production samples, not fixtures, or the real edge cases stay hidden until the run.
