Solution skill

connector validation error: inbound phish not stamped with auth headers

Version 1

Complete solution

Fixes a connector validation problem where inbound phish arrived without authentication headers being stamped, restoring header-based filtering. Use when inbound mail lacks Authentication-Results or ARC headers at the tenant boundary. Not for mail that has headers showing genuine authentication failures.

TL;DR

Filters downstream can only use authentication results that exist. When a connector is misconfigured, for example mail routed through a third party gateway without the connector set to trust and stamp its results, messages arrive with no Authentication-Results for your rules to read, and header-based checks silently do nothing. Identify the actual ingress path, configure the connector so the gateway results are honoured or re-checked, and confirm headers appear.

connector validation error: inbound phish not stamped with auth headers

Use this when

  • Inbound messages show no Authentication-Results header in your tenant.
  • SPF and DMARC rules stopped working after a gateway or routing change.

Not for this skill when

  • Headers exist and show fail verdicts. Act on the failures themselves.
  • Only internal mail lacks the headers. Internal routing legitimately differs.

Steps

  1. Trace an inbound phish and record its ingress connector and every authentication header present on arrival. Verify: the path and the missing headers are confirmed.
  2. Check whether a third party gateway fronts your tenant and whether enhanced filtering or connector trust for that gateway is configured. Verify: the gateway relationship in connector settings is explicit.
  3. If the gateway checks authentication, enable the setting that lets your tenant honour its stamped results; if not, ensure your service performs its own checks on the true originating IP. Verify: one authoritative checking point is chosen.
  4. Validate the connector and send an external test message through the gateway. Verify: Authentication-Results appear with SPF, DKIM and DMARC verdicts.
  5. Re-run a known phish sample through the path in a test tenant or controlled send. Verify: header-based rules now act on it.

Variant phrasings

enhanced filtering for connectors authentication results missing

The Defender enhanced filtering variant.

inbound connector gateway spf headers not stamped

The gateway variant.

Compatibility: Exchange Online connectors and Enhanced Filtering, third party gateways fronting Microsoft 365.

Why it happens

Authentication headers are stamped at the boundary that performs the checks. Layered gateways move that boundary, and unless the inner tenant is told to trust the outer stamp, or to check using the original IP, the results are dropped between systems.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Enhanced filtering needs the real sending IPs configured; stale gateway IPs silently break it after vendor changes.
  • Never trust headers arriving from the open internet. Trust only headers your controlled gateway added, identified by its configuration.
  • After any MX or gateway change, re-test header stamping as part of cutover checks.
