Dynamics 365 "the dimensions are out of balance by 0.02" error on the year-end closing journal

Version 1

Complete solution

Fixes the Dynamics 365 error the dimensions are out of balance by 0.02 on the year-end closing journal: check the balancing financial dimension setup, find the voucher lines missing the balancing dimension, and correct rounding. Use in Dynamics 365 Finance closing journals. Not for a ledger settlement difference.

TL;DR

Dynamics 365 Finance can require journals to balance not only in total but per balancing financial dimension value, typically BusinessUnit or Department. A 0.02 failure means one dimension value carries two cents more debit than credit, usually from a closing or reclassification journal copied from a template whose lines lack the dimension, or from rounding on allocation lines. Open the voucher, group the lines by the balancing dimension, and repair the group that is out: add the missing dimension values or move the rounding cent onto the largest line in that dimension. Then validate the journal again before posting. Turning off the balancing requirement to force a year-end journal through undermines the dimension reporting the close depends on.

Dynamics 365 "the dimensions are out of balance by 0.02" error on the year-end closing journal

Use this when

  • A general journal in Dynamics 365 Finance fails validation with dimensions out of balance by a small amount.
  • Ledger setup marks a financial dimension as balancing for the legal entity.
  • The journal is a year-end closing, reclass or allocation entry with many lines per dimension value.

Not for this skill when

  • The journal is out of balance in total by a large amount. That is incomplete lines, not a dimension balance problem.
  • The error is about dimension combinations being invalid or blocked. Fix the combination rules instead.

Steps

  1. Open the journal voucher and note the amount and currency in the error, then export or filter the lines for review. Verify: the failing voucher and its full line set are in front of you
  2. Check Ledger setup for the legal entity to confirm which financial dimension is set as the balancing dimension. Verify: the balancing dimension, usually BusinessUnit or Department, is confirmed from setup
  3. Group the journal lines by that dimension and sum debits and credits per value in a spreadsheet or the voucher totals view. Verify: one dimension value shows the 0.02 imbalance while others balance
  4. Repair that group: fill blank dimension values from the source document and place any rounding cent on the largest line in the group. Verify: the group sums to zero difference per dimension value
  5. Validate the journal in Dynamics, post it, and run the trial balance by dimension to confirm reporting is clean. Verify: validation passes, the journal posts, and the by-dimension trial balance ties to the ledger total

Why it happens

Dimension balancing exists so reports by business unit or department are self-balancing: every unit's trial balance can stand alone. Closing journals break it quietly because they are often built in spreadsheets where the dimension column is dropped, merged or rounded per line. The system checks each dimension value as its own mini ledger, so a journal that balances in total still fails when one unit absorbs a rounding cent that belongs to another.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Opening balance journals after migration are the worst offenders; validate them per dimension before the first close, not during it.
  • Intercompany journals need the balancing dimension and the company dimension to agree; a fix in one entity must mirror in the other.
  • If allocations run monthly, build the rounding plug into the allocation rule per dimension instead of hand-fixing cents forever.
