Immutable solution version

hashcat "no devices found" on tester gpu box

Version 1

Complete solution

Fixes hashcat reporting no devices found on a tester GPU box by repairing the OpenCL or CUDA runtime detection. Use when hashcat cannot see a GPU that is present, for hash material obtained in an authorized test. Not for CPU-only runs, which should be configured explicitly.

TL;DR

Hashcat finds devices through the GPU compute runtime, not the graphics driver alone, so a box can game and render fine while hashcat sees nothing. Install or repair the matching OpenCL or CUDA runtime for the card, confirm the runtime itself lists the device, and rerun hashcat's device query until the GPU appears before starting any authorized cracking job.

hashcat "no devices found" on tester gpu box

Use this when

  • hashcat device listing or a benchmark reports no devices found on a box with a working GPU.
  • The failure started after a driver update, an OS reinstall, or moving to a new cracking rig.

Not for this skill when

  • The box genuinely has no GPU and integrated graphics are unsupported. Plan a CPU run or different hardware.
  • Hashcat sees the device but rejects the hash mode or the hash format. Those are separate errors with the device present.

Steps

  1. Confirm the operating system sees the GPU, using the vendor tool or system information, and note the exact model and driver version. Verify: Verify: the OS lists the card and a current driver.
  2. Check the compute runtime with its own diagnostic, clinfo for OpenCL or the CUDA device query, rather than trusting hashcat yet. Verify: Verify: either the runtime lists the GPU, or you have isolated the failure to the runtime layer.
  3. Install or repair the matching runtime and, on Linux, the vendor OpenCL ICD package for the card, then reboot if the driver stack changed. Verify: Verify: the runtime diagnostic now enumerates the GPU.
  4. Run hashcat's device information option and confirm the GPU appears with its compute capability. Verify: Verify: hashcat lists the device you expect, by name.
  5. Run a short hashcat benchmark before loading any engagement material, and record the working driver and runtime versions in the rig runbook. Verify: Verify: the benchmark completes and the versions are written down for the next failure.

Variant phrasings

hashcat no opencl devices found clinfo empty

The OpenCL phrasing.

hashcat cuda device not detected after driver update

The CUDA phrasing.

hashcat benchmark no devices gpu present linux

The Linux rig phrasing.

Compatibility: Compatibility: hashcat 6.x on Windows and Linux; runtime packages differ between NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel devices.

Why it happens

Hashcat does not talk to the GPU directly: it enumerates compute devices through OpenCL or CUDA, and those runtimes are separate installs from the display driver. A missing ICD file, a runtime broken by an update, or a headless service session can therefore hide a healthy card from hashcat while everything else looks fine.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Only crack hash material the engagement authorises, with the agreed storage and destruction handling; a fixed rig does not widen that permission.
  • Laptop hybrid graphics often hide the discrete GPU from compute runtimes until the performance profile is selected.
  • Virtual machines need explicit GPU passthrough; a virtual display adapter will never appear as a compute device.
