Solution skill

Azure Recovery Services vault restore failed "vault is in soft delete state" error

Version 1

Complete solution

A vault in soft delete state still holds its deleted items for the retention window and blocks operations that assume it is fully gone or fully alive: to restore, use the soft-deleted item's restore path, undelete it first if the vault itself was deleted; to remove the vault, purge the soft-deleted items after their retention or wait it out. Use when an Azure Recovery Services vault restore touching soft-deleted.

TL;DR

A vault in soft delete state still holds its deleted items for the retention window and blocks operations that assume it is fully gone or fully alive: to restore, use the soft-deleted item's restore path, undelete it first if the vault itself was deleted; to remove the vault, purge the soft-deleted items after their retention or wait it out. Decide which side of the soft delete you intend, because restoring from it and deleting it are opposite operations with similar screens.

Azure Recovery Services vault restore failed "vault is in soft delete state" error

Use this when

  • The job or restore fails with this symptom: Azure Recovery Services vault restore failed with vault is in soft delete state.
  • You are working on an Azure Recovery Services vault restore touching soft-deleted items and the failure repeats on the same target or schedule.
  • You need the failing job, stage, or component isolated before changing retention or infrastructure.

Not for this skill when

  • A vault deletion blocked by soft-deleted items the operator actually wants purged, where the fix is the purge flow rather than a restore.
  • The error text names a different product, stage, or root cause. Match the verbatim error first and use that skill.

Steps

  1. Determine what is soft-deleted: the backup item, the vault itself, or both, from the vault's soft delete views. Verify: the soft-deleted objects are identified
  2. If restoring data, undelete the item or use the restore flow offered for soft-deleted items, then run the restore from the recovered item. Verify: the item is available for restore
  3. If the goal was vault removal, note the retention expiry for each soft-deleted item and plan the purge accordingly. Verify: the removal timeline is explicit
  4. Complete the chosen operation and verify the vault and item states match the intent. Verify: states align with the decision made

Variant phrasings

azure recovery services vault soft delete state restore failed

The verbatim phrasing.

azure backup vault soft delete undelete item restore fix

The undelete phrasing.

azure vault in soft delete state cannot restore purge

The purge phrasing.

Compatibility: Azure Recovery Services vaults and soft delete retention

Why it happens

Soft delete is a safety state, not an error state: deleted protection data is retained for a window so accidents can be undone. Operations written as if deletion were instant collide with that retained state, and the vault reports its condition without saying which operation the caller really wanted.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Enhanced soft delete can extend retention beyond the standard window; check the vault's actual policy.
  • Alerts on soft-deleted items nearing forced purge prevent the restore window from closing unnoticed.
