Complete solution
Guide Finix: void releases an uncaptured auth, refund returns captured funds; they are not interchangeable: Calling void on a captured payment fails: at that point the money has moved and only a refund works. Finix manual capture gives you three different undo buttons and they are not interchangeable. Use this when you hit exactly this in Finix. Not for different errors or different tools.
TL;DR: Calling void on a captured payment fails: at that point the money has moved and only a refund works. Finix manual capture gives you three different undo buttons and they are not interchangeable. In Manual (Authorize Only) mode the payment is reserved, not collected.
Fix
Calling void on a captured payment fails: at that point the money has moved and only a refund works. Expected: this specific failure stops.
Details
Finix manual capture gives you three different undo buttons and they are not interchangeable. In Manual (Authorize Only) mode the payment is reserved, not collected. Capture Payment collects it. Void Authorization releases the uncaptured hold and is only valid before capture. Refund returns money after capture. If you ship-then-charge, default to manual capture, void the auth if the order cancels before shipment, and refund only after the customer was actually charged.
When to use
You hit exactly this: Finix: void releases an uncaptured auth, refund returns captured funds; they are not interchangeable in Finix.
When not to use
A different error, or the same symptom in a different tool. This page only covers the failure above.
Compatibility
Finix.
Evidence
Real reported problem from web:github.com:finix-capture-void-refund: Web source (j2commerce/documentation Finix payment plugin docs on github.com): Finix supports two capture methods with strict action semantics. Automatic collects funds at authorization time. Manual (Authorize Only) reserves the amount; you later either Capture Payment to collect, or Void Authorization to release the hold. Once captured, Void is no longer available: you must use Refund instead. The verified fix/answer: Finix manual capture gives you three different undo buttons and they are not interchangeable. In Manual (Authorize Only) mode the payment is reserved, not collected. Capture Payment collects it. Void Authorization releases the uncaptured hold and is only valid before capture. Refund returns money after capture. Calling void on a captured payment fails: at that point the money has moved and only a refund works. If you ship-then-charge, default to manual capture, void the auth if the order cancels before shipment, and refund only after the customer was actually charged.
