striking-distance keywords: positions 4-20 with zero clicks
Explains the striking-distance keyword tactic: finding queries where you rank on page one or two with no clicks, and the page improvements that convert them. Use it when GSC shows impressions without clicks on mid-ranked queries. Not for queries with no impressions at all.
TL;DR
Striking-distance keywords are queries where you already rank between positions 4 and 20 but get zero clicks: Google considers you relevant, but your snippet loses the click. The fix is usually on-page, not more links: sharpen the title to match the query, rewrite the meta description as a click pitch, and make sure the page answers the query in the first screen. Small edits here convert existing impressions into traffic.
striking-distance keywords: positions 4-20 with zero clicksUse this when
- GSC shows queries with impressions 2+, clicks = 0, average position 4-20
- You want traffic wins without writing new content
- A page ranks but the snippet clearly doesnt match the query intent
- You need to prioritize which existing pages to improve first
Not for this skill when
- The query has no impressions (nothing to convert)
- The page ranks beyond position 20 (that is a relevance or authority problem)
- The page already gets clicks (optimize something else)
Steps
- Build the striking-distance list. Filter GSC rows: impressions 2+, clicks = 0, position between 4 and 20. Expected: a ranked list of queries sorted by impressions.
Filter: impressions 2+ AND clicks = 0 AND position 4 to 20.
Sort by impressions descending.- Match each query to its ranking page. GSC's page dimension shows which URL Google serves for the query. Expected: every query maps to exactly one page to improve.
Dimensions: query + page. One page per query; fix that page.- Rewrite the title to mirror the query. Put the query's key terms, especially error strings, near the front of the title tag. Expected: the snippet visibly matches what the searcher typed.
Before: generic programmatic title.
After: title leads with the exact query terms.- Rewrite the meta description as a pitch. One to two sentences: what the page delivers and why it answers this query. Expected: higher CTR on the same impressions.
Formula: what you get + who it is for + the outcome.
Keep it under 155 characters so it doesnt truncate.- Answer the query above the fold. Put the direct answer or fix in the first screen of the page. Expected: the snippet Google generates (or the one you wrote) matches satisfied searchers.
First screen: the answer, then the detail below.
Checklist: query terms appear in H1 and first paragraph.Variant phrasings
Keywords ranking page 2 with no clicks
Same playbook: they are one good snippet and a tighter page away from page-one clicks.
How to find striking distance keywords
Step 1's filter is the whole technique; run it monthly.
Improve CTR for mid-ranked queries
Title mirrors the query, description pitches the click, answer sits above the fold.
Why it happens
Positions 4 through 20 mean Google already trusts the page for the query; the missing clicks are a presentation problem, not an authority problem. Searchers scan snippets for their exact words and a reason to click. Programmatic pages often have generic titles that dont contain the query terms, so the searcher skips past to a result that looks like a match. Fixing the snippet converts relevance you already earned into traffic you are currently donating to competitors.
Edge cases / pitfalls
- Position is an average across many searches; a query at "position 8" might be position 3 for some users and 30 for others.
- If the query intent is transactional and your page is informational, no snippet tweak will fix the mismatch; that is a different page.
- Dont stuff the query verbatim five times; one natural placement in title and H1 is enough.
- Track before and after CTR per query; some queries are just low-click (instant answers, navigational).
- Rewriting titles at scale needs a template change, not 200 manual edits; fix the generator.
